What
Do You Know About Halloween???
Halloween is a fun and spooky time but do you know the little tidbits
of how Halloween came to be and other cool stuff surrounding
Halloween. Here are some interesting facts that you can astound your
children with:
- Jack o’ lanterns originated in Ireland where people placed candles
in hollowed-out turnips to keep away spirits and ghosts on the Samhain
holiday.
- The ancient Celts thought that spirits and ghosts roamed the
countryside on Halloween night. They began wearing masks and costumes
to avoid being recognized as human.

- Tootsie Rolls were the first wrapped penny candy in America.
- Signs of a werewolf are a unibrow, hair palms, tattoos, and a long
middle finger.
- In 1962, the Count Dracula Society was founded.
- To this day, there are vampire clubs and societies with people
claiming to be real vampires.
- If you see a spider on Halloween, it is the spirit of a loved on
watching over you.
- The common little brown bat of North America has the longest life
span for a mammal it's size, with a life span averaging 32 years.
- The Ouija Board ended up outselling the game of Monopoly in its
first full year at Salem. Over two million copies of the Ouija Board
were shipped.
- If you stare at a mirror at midnight on Halloween you will see your
future spouse.
- The first Jack-o-Lanterns were made in Ireland out of hollowed-out
turnips. A piece of coal was inserted into the hollow and the
"lantern" was meant to guide the way of poor old Jack who
wasn't welcome in Heaven but was also barred from entering Hell for
tricking the devil. According to legend, the devil gave this crude
lamp to Jack so that he could walk the earth forever in limbo.
The world's record for biggest pumpkin is currently held by a
gigantic gourd weighing a whopping 1,385 pounds!
- None of the "witches" put to death in the Salem
Witch trials were burned at the stake. All those executed were hanged
but one, Giles Cory, who was pressed to death. Several others died in
prison.
- It is believed that the Irish began the tradition of tric or
treating. In preparation for All Hallow's Eve, Irish townsfolk
would visit neighbors and ask for contributions of food for a feast in
the town.
- The ancient Celts thought that spirits and ghosts roamed the
countryside on Halloween night. They began wearing masks and costumes
to avoid being recognized as human.
- The most popular Halloween candy is chocolate bars.
